Top 5 Travel Apps for 2010 - 28 Jun 2016 08:09

[
]Sometimes you find your app and sometimes your app finds you.

As of this writing the number one free app in the iTunes store was the game iDragPaper, inviting you to swipe at your iPhone touchscreen to see how fast you can unroll a virtual roll of toilet paper. Never mind that I can watch my three-year-old unravel a real roll at least twice a day. The app's mindless fun and that's fine. But it's not the type of app you look for out of need. It finds you. When it comes to travel apps, sure, you might want a few silly ones to find you the next time you're waiting to be patted down at the airport. But before that happens, here are five apps you ought to go find.

Best laptop guardian: Laptop Cop, $49.95 for app and 1-year license. Windows XP, Vista, and 7.

A laptop gets stolen every 53 seconds, according to an FBI statistic quoted by the makers of PC software app Laptop Cop. And if your laptop is ever one of them, you might be able to remotely access its files or recover your laptop if Laptop Cop's installed on it. One catch: The thief has to have your laptop powered on as well as online for any of the app's functions to work. But it's better than nothing. Here's how it might go down. After realizing your laptop's been snatched, you'd get to a Web-enabled desktop or laptop — or smart phone, if it can run Adobe Flash Player 10 — log into your Laptop Cop online account, and click a button reporting your laptop stolen. At this point, if your thief is not yet surfing the Web, you can queue up any important files or compromising photos you'd want to retrieve or delete. As soon as the thief or the person to whom he's already sold your laptop goes online, "the retrieval/deletion process automatically takes place," according to a company customer service rep.

Meanwhile, the app geolocates your machine, "pinging" both secure and unsecure Wi-Fi hotspots to triangulate your laptop's position, which you'll be able to see mapped in real time while logged in to your account. You can also monitor and record your thief's online activities and pass that info on to law enforcement should you not want to try to recover the laptop yourself. If you're more interested in disabling the laptop, call or live chat with Laptop Cop's recovery team who can remotely lock down your laptop, rendering it permanently unusable. You can utilize Laptop Cop and its recovery team while you're overseas, too, as long as your stolen laptop remains in an area covered by Skyhook Wireless, with whom Laptop Cop partners to geolocate, ping, and triangulate.

Best neighborhood watch: SpotCrime. Free Web app for all devices, iPhone optimized.

A free Web app available for the iPhone or viewable on any smart phone or laptop, Spotcrime lets you track crimes in virtually any neighborhood for which crime data is available. Wondering what crime is like near your hotel or a few neighborhoods away? Pick your destination city from a drop-down menu or enter a specific address and a Google map studded with "crime icons" appears. Fists indicate assault & battery, tiny menacing stick figures indicate thefts, and so on. If you're using an iPhone you can tap the map icons to see the addresses and times of the crimes, which are also listed under the map if you're touchscreen deprived. The plotted crimes are fairly current, in some cases having been committed the day you check. With many of the crimes you can click a "view source" link to see where Spotcrime got its information. Often the source is an online city police blotter, fascinating reading if you have the time.

Best one-stop shop: NYC Way. Free iPhone app, Web app.

When you ask NYC Way to either find your current location via GPS or direct it to search a different zip code, it returns location-specific information about nearby parks, museums, stores, and other attractions. This feature alone is valuable, but what makes this app exemplary is all its little microapps, whose info you can string together in very useful combinations. Wondering what food carts are in your current neighborhood? Tap "Food Stands" and get listings with the carts' avenues and cross streets. Sorry you just sucked those chunks of mystery meat off that long toothpick? Tap "Utilities" for the closest pharmacy or "Safety" for the nearest ER. The best feature? The info-packed Events button, which beautifully marries time-sensitive info with geopositioning by letting you know what's happening somewhere when you're actually there. The day I tested the app I liked knowing there was a wine social on a heated rooftop a few blocks from where I was. I was less excited about an anime convention in Hoboken, N.J., but it's always nice to know your options. While also available as a Web app, NYC Way navigation is far more nimble with the iPhone touchscreen.

Best in-flight education: iTunes University. Free apps for iPods and other MP3-enabled devices.

Remember in the very first "Superman" movie when baby Kal-El has to listen to all those educational tapes on the flight from Krypton to Earth so that he's really smart by the time his escape pod lands? Sitting on a plane while listening to the free lectures available from iTunes University is sort of like that.

Looking for a get-rich-quick scheme? Download the Stanford University course on iPhone Application Development. Hoping to psych out a coworker? Listen to the Introduction to Psychology Course from Yale. Looking for something a little less Ivy League? Sample the "Bad Philosophy" lessons from Texas Tech University students who pontificate about everything from the origins of the universe to the meaning of all the apps that Google can't seem to stop developing.

Best invention ever: Tether for Blackberry, $49.95

Have you ever nursed a bitter cup of coffee or overpriced sandwich just so you could connect your laptop to an establishment's free Wi-Fi? Have you ever gone to sit in a hotel lobby and become enraged that other free-Wi-Fi users are hogging all the seats? If you own a BlackBerry with a flat-rate data plan, download Tether for Blackberry, formerly known as Tetherberry, and life will be different.

After separately downloading Tether directly to my laptop and Blackberry, I realized I misunderstood how it worked. I thought my laptop's Wi-Fi card would be connecting directly with my Blackberry to enable my laptop's Internet connection. Not so. In the laptop-Tether relationship, a Wi-Fi card is a third wheel - whether it's internal or external, disable it before running Tether to avoid mixed signals, literally. Your big decision once running the Tether app on both devices is whether you want them to connect via Bluetooth or a USB-cable. My laptop isn't Bluetooth enabled but my desktop is, so after loading Tether on my desktop I was able to establish a Bluetooth connection between the devices. The only problem was that Web browsing worked very slowly. I figured it had to be faster via USB (I later found that it was) but I wanted to save Tether's maiden USB connection for my laptop.

Using the USB cable that came with my Blackberry, I connected the smart phone and laptop, disabled my external wireless card, and ran Tether on both devices. The Tether status windows on both devices quickly acknowledged the connection. I opened my browser, and there was my Google homepage. Could I really browse? Yes. Quickly? Yes. Could I make and receive phone calls as well as send and receive emails on both devices while they were tethering? Yes to all. Suddenly, I looked at my dormant Wi-Fi card, not believing that it wasn't doing something, and yanked the card out of its slot. Sure enough, Web browsing continued unabated. And while it wasn't quite the wireless experience I had anticipated, I guess they call it tethering for a reason. Now if Tether could just get my Blackberry to also charge my laptop's battery while it was connected, that would be an even bigger game-changer.

Click here for more from Foxnews.com Travel[
] - Comments: 0

Google echoes Amazon's Echo, opens new virtual-reality door - 24 Jun 2016 06:41

[
]MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (AP) — Google wants to play an even bigger role in managing people's daily lives, while also nudging them into an alternate reality, as the Internet company responds to competitive threats posed by Facebook, Amazon and Apple.

As part of an onslaught of upcoming products, Google will implant a more personable form of artificial intelligence into an Internet-connected device called Home, which echoes the Echo, Amazon.com's trendy smart-home speaker.

Meanwhile, Google will also delve deeper into the still-nascent realm of virtual reality with a system called Daydream that's meant to challenge Facebook-owned Oculus's early lead in fabricating artificial worlds.

In an attempt to outshine Apple, Google is also adding features to its Android operating system, including the ability to run apps without actually installing them on a device.

That feature, called Instant Apps, might have been the biggest breakthrough that Google announced Wednesday at its annual developers conference held in an amphitheater located a few blocks from its Mountain View, California, headquarters.

It's the first time that Google has held the conference in its hometown since the inaugural event in 2006. Google CEO Sundar Pichai told a crowd of more than 7,000 people that he wanted to move the conference from San Francisco back to Mountain View to underscore a "pivotal moment in terms of where the company is going."

Instant Apps is Google's answer to the pain of installing phone apps you know you'll use just once or twice, for shopping or booking a parking spot, for example. With this approach, the app runs on Google's servers instead of your phone. Only the parts you need are sent to your phone on an as-needed basis.

There will also be a new chat service called Allo that's designed to counter Facebook's Messenger app and WhatsApp. Allo will draw upon a vast database that Google has built through its dominant Internet search engine to predict how you might want to respond to a text and automatically fetch links to video clips and other information that seem relevant to an ongoing conversation.

Although the upcoming products will offer some unique features, they mostly painted a picture of a company scrambling to catch up with its rivals.

"The technology looks good in principle, but there's a significant risk that Google is coming into some of these markets too late to make a difference," said Jackdaw Research analyst Jan Dawson.

Google Home, for instance, will mostly do the same things already performed by the Echo, a cylinder-like speaker that Amazon released last year. The Echo responds to voice commands to play music, read books, answer questions and manage calendars. It also turns off the lights, hails Uber rides and keeps adding new tasks as programmers build more apps for it.

Not surprisingly, Google touted its Home speaker as a more intelligent and versatile device, mostly because it can tap into the same stockpile of information that makes Google's Internet search place so popular. Google also has redesigned its virtual assistant to be more conversational and intuitive. It will be the voice and brains inside Google Home.

Although it is meant to be more personal than the automated voice that Google currently uses to respond to spoken requests on smartphones and computers, the company is simply calling it "Assistant." That contrasts with the human names given to other virtual assistants from Amazon (Alexa), Apple (Siri) and Microsoft (Cortana).

Google didn't reveal a price for the Home device, though it presumably will be competitive with the Echo, which sells for $180. Even if Home proves to be superior to the Echo, Gartner analyst Brian Blau thinks Google will be hard-pressed to surpass Amazon in the category. Amazon's leadership in e-commerce means it Echo "can always be on the front-page of Amazon's site and that is going to make it difficult for any rival to catch up," Blau said.

Daydream is a new virtual reality ecosystem that will be made available to all comers, duplicating a strategy that worked well for Google after it fell behind Apple following the iPhone's debut nearly a decade ago.

To get the ball rolling, Google will sell a virtual-reality headset with a wireless motion controller expected to carry the Nexus brand that the company original created as a showcase for its Android operating system for smartphones. Google didn't announce the price for the VR headset at Wednesday's conference, nor did it specify when it will hit the market. A similar headset, the Gear VR, made by Samsung and powered by Facebook's Oculus subsidiary, costs $100.

Consumers will need a new smartphone to power the headset. It is going to be tethered to the "N'' version of Android that Google plans to release later this year and requires more processing power and sensors unavailable in any phone already out.

The new headset marks a major upgrade from Google's initial foray into VR in 2014, a cheap model made out of cardboard that sells for as little as $15 and is even given away in sales promotions by some companies.

"You could say Google has been the paper-based leader in VR, but otherwise you could say Google is well behind Facebook in VR," Blau said.

Google's new VR headset won't be as sophisticated as the recently released Rift from Oculus, which costs $600 and must be tethered to computers that can cost another $1,000 or so. Oculus spent several years perfecting the Rift, which features technology that looks so revolutionary that Facebook paid $2 billion to buy the startup in 2014.

Google is now part of a larger holding company known as Alphabet Inc.

__

AP Technology Writers Barbara Ortutay in New York and Ryan Nakashima in Los Angeles contributed to this story.

[

A Java Web Application Framework - 19 Jun 2016 02:23

Tags:

[
]Introduction

Perhaps you're tired of battling web frameworks with their mix of languages, rules, configurations, scripts and XML files. Are page-oriented web apps with the attendant complexity of handling state, debugging and testing making life difficult? Does the thought of supporting multiple browsers suck all the air out of the room? Maybe you or your team are Java developers, more familiar with Java application development than web development. For these reasons and more, you should investigate Vaadin, which is Open Source and freely available at http://vaadin.com under the Apache 2.0 license.

Server-Side Development

Vaadin is a Java web application framework for Rich Internet Applications (RIA) which have many characteristics of desktop applications but are web applications running in browsers. The large collection of UI components and the use of layouts is more akin to Swing development for the desktop. Developers implement these widgets in a Java server application which Vaadin dynamically translates (using Google's Web Toolkit (GWT)) into browser client-side components using AJAX technology behind the scenes. The application code runs in the server, handling the client requests via "normal" event listener handlers.

Support, Community and Tools

The free support behind Vaadin is impressive. The Book of Vaadin is an excellent manual. There is a short tutorial and a long tutorial covering many aspects of the Vaadin library. I have used the Vaadin Forum several times and the response from the community has been swift and helpful. Vaadin also provides an impressive Sampler Demo page which shows off all the UI components and the source samples used behind each one. And, of course, the source code for Vaadin is available.

Also available are tools for Eclipse and Netbeans integration, Maven support and testing. I've used the Eclipse plug-in for development and a Glassfish server and debugging is almost like debugging a desktop application— no more breaks when something magical happens because of XML. I would say the area that could use more attention is explaining database binding. It's discussed in the book, but not really demonstrated. A solid tutorial showing this, now that one of the SQL Add-ons has lately been incorporated into the basic Vaadin library, would be useful.

There is a growing library of Add-ons (nearly 200), some free and some for sale. Example Add-ons include additional UI widgets, data components, themes, tools, etc.

Basic Vaadin, however, may be all you need. The basic Vaadin library is a single JAR file which needs to be included as part of your web application.

The company behind Vaadin is Vaadin Ltd., based in Finland. They also provide support and development help for a fee. The Vaadin framework may not be the holy grail but it's worth a look, if only to compare it to other frameworks.

Some other features:

The five supported browsers are:

Servers supported:

Apache Tomcat 4.1+

Oracle Weblogic Server 9.2+

IBM WebSphere Application Server 6.1+

JBoss Application Server 3.2.8+

Glassfish 2+

Google App Engine

Others

Comprehensive Component Framework

Rich, interactive widgets with lazy-loading

Drag and Drop support

Mobile touch event support

Databinding using MVC

Security

Server-side state management

Application code runs in the server

Secure parameter and request validation

Built-in input validation

SSL support

Extensible Component Architecture

http://hubpages.com/technology/Vaadin[

A search on the Android app store Google Play and the iPhone App Store produced around 1,000 results.

ByteMobile, a research firm that anonymously sources data traffic statistics from the 3G and 4G networks, meaning they monitor actual usage activity of mobile users worldwide, released its first quarter 2013 Mobile Analytics Report in February. According to the report, on average, 47 percent of total mobile subscribers using one or more health app are using a pregnancy-related app.

There are apps for monitoring your baby bump, apps that provide check lists to help with "baby brain," apps that provide a list of foods that are pregnancy no-no's. There is even an app that will morph photos of you and your partner's faces together to show what your baby might look like.

WebMD, the health and medical online database — or as some like to call it, the self-diagnosis website — this week released WebMD Pregnancy, a free app for iPhone that provides "hundreds of doctor-approved multimedia information and advice" for expectant mothers.

This app is all-encompassing. It includes 3-D visuals of a mother's changing body as well as the baby's development week-to-week (based on the due date), a check-list of common questions to ask the doctor (based on each pre-natal appointment), a symptoms tracker, a contraction timer, tips for healthy pregnancy and articles targeted to your current trimester.

But there are plenty of other pregnancy apps that can help moms-to-be prepare for pregnancy. We shifted through dozens of apps to help new parents. Click through the list to see some of our favorites.

Disclaimer: Most pregnancy apps are created just for fun and are not approved or sponsored by medical professionals. Always raise any and all questions or concerns about your pregnancy with your doctor.

Trying for ConceptionPeriod Tracker, Free for Android and iPhone

At first glance, the Period Tracker looks more flowery than a tampon commercial, but don't let that put you off.

This app, which was created by GP International LLC, is very user-friendly. It tracks your period and ovulation cycles every month with just the press of a button.

After you enter start and end dates for your period, it then logs and calculates the average period start date over the course of three months to predict the start date for future periods, ovulation days and fertile days — all of which appear on a month-by-month calendar. Users can also mark "intimate" days on the calendar.

The Period Tracker allows users to note moods and symptoms, such as acne, body aches and cramps, by date. In the app's Period Log, users can write their questions or thoughts to share with their doctor later.

Trying for ConceptionKindara Fertility, Free for iPhone

The Kindara Fertility app is a little overwhelming, at first, but anyone who is super detail-oriented will love this app.

A lot less flowery than other ovulation trackers, Kindara breaks down your menstrual cycle and all those days in between by fluid type and flow, plotting them on a chart over the course of 30 days and noting which days the user is ovulating.

It also lets you keep track of your body temperature — because your temperature tends to rise a few degrees when you are ovulating — as well as moods, OPK results, spotting and pain levels so you can talk to your doctor about it at your next visit.

The click-through tutorial that walks users through the app after it is first downloaded is also appreciated.

Monitoring the BumpBabyBump Pregnancy, Free for Android and iPhone

The BabyBump Pregnancy app, created by Alt12 Apps, Inc., not only counts down the days left before your due date and what week you are currently in your pregnancy, it also tells you what symptoms you might be feeling and when.

For example, the app tells you in Week 18 you might be feeling dizzy and reassures you that is normal. It couples that with diagrams and illustrations, like the ones you would see in an OB/GYN office, that show what the baby would look like and how it should be positioned in the womb from week to week.

BabyBump also connects you to community message boards within the app to offer users discussions on almost everything, from general support to baby name ideas, and to share photos of your growing bump.

Monitoring the BumpPregnancy/Sprout, Free for iPhone

What made the Sprout app by Med ART studios stand out from other pregnancy apps is that it offers full-screen, 3-D interactives of how the fetus, its organs, limbs and facial features develop from week to week.

Sort of like Cliffs Notes from the "Gray's Anatomy" reproductive section, each slide in the app shows the next stage in fetus' development with three to four buttons per slide that pop up with interesting facts. For example, on the Week 21 slide, one of the buttons pop up with, "Your developing fetus now often hiccups."

Similar to other apps, Sprout has a "The Doc Says" tab, which offers a week-by-week explanation of symptoms you are probably experiencing as the fetus grows. It also includes a weight tracker, a baby kick counter, a contraction timer and an organizer to keep track of appointments and prepare for your baby's arrival, including details ranging from what to put in the hospital bag to essential items for bringing the baby home, such as a car seat.

Planning for Baby's ArrivalPeaceful Nursery, $0.99 for iPhone

For all you organic and eco-friendly — and expectant — enthusiasts out there, this app is for you.

Peaceful Nursery app by Spirit Quest World provides a shopping list for an eco-friendly nursery, including suggestions for an organic crib mattress, organic cotton crib sheets and other times.

The app also has tips for how to have a healthier home for your baby, such as opening windows from time to time for better ventilation.

Planning for Baby's Arrival

There are several pregnancy apps that include a checklist for what to pack in your hospital bag for when you go into labor.

What sets the BabyBag app by Andreas Krawczyk apart is that it lets users create several customized "packlists" for you, your partner, your baby — heck, even grandma-to-be can have a list.

Other apps only offered a checklist for "mommy's bag" or "mommy, daddy and baby's bag." This app gives users a bit more freedom to personalize their lists.

Each packlist has three tabs: all, which shows the full list of what you select to put in your bag; packed, which shows only the items you have checked off; and missing, which shows the items you haven't checked off.

But one of the best features is that the app allows you to set a "first pack reminder" and a "second pack reminder" alert by date and time — your due date, perhaps.

Planning for Baby's ArrivalMy Pregnancy Today, Free for Android

My Pregnancy Today app by BabyCenter is one of the most popular pregnancy apps in the Google Play store, with more than one million downloads in the past month.

It is another one of the all-encompassing pregnancy apps, with week-by-week fetal development images, explanations for how your pregnant body will change over time and a due date calculator, to name a few, but the "Check List" is one of the best features of this app.

Designated as its own tab, the Check List breaks down week-by-week lists of suggestions for what you could be doing to stay healthy and prepare for labor. For example, in Week 16, the app says you should be doing kegel exercises and making a prenatal appointment for your first trimester.

Staying HealthyFoods to Avoid When Pregnant, $0.99 for iPhone

This app could not be more straightforward. Its name says it all.

The Foods to Avoid When Pregnant app, created by LitCharts, provides full menus of all those foods you are supposed to avoid when expecting and breaks them down into eight main categories: cheese and dairy, dressing and condiments, drinks and beverages, fish and seafood, frozen and prepared foods, meat and eggs, pates and spreads, and vegetables.

From there, the app breaks the categories down even further into different ways those foods are prepared and what pregnant women should and should not eat.

For example, the meat and dairy section is broken down into six more categories. One section, labeled "Eggs, Cooked," says "cooked eggs are safe for pregnant women to eat but under-cooked eggs could be contaminated with salmonella," so pregnant women should avoid runny or soft-boiled eggs.

Similar for Android: Pregnancy Food Guide, $2.99

Staying HealthyPregnant and FIT!, $3.99 for iPhone

There are several apps for both iPhone and Android devices that offer pilates, yoga and other exercise moves specifically tailored to pregnant women — again, please consult your doctor first — but many those apps seemed to be on the pricey side. Some were selling for as much as $9.99.

Pregnant and FIT! by Brooklyn Academy Roots LLC is on the pricey end, as far as apps go, at $3.99, but the clean and user-friendly layout made this app seem worth it.

First, the home screen asks users if they want to do a 30-minute workout or a full-body one. The next screen asks users to select a workout based on intensity: "Mama's Tired, Feeling Good or Super Mom." Then, it lists the type of equipment you need and shows step-by-step exercise instructions, complete with photos.

Staying HealthyI'm Pregnant, Free for Android

I'm Pregnant by Kolsoft is another all-encompassing app that includes week-by-week explanations of changes in your body and fetal development, a calendar, a weight tracker, a kick counter, packing check lists and a notes, or "diary," section.

But what made this app different is it also offers tips for healthy eating during conception and pregnancy, as well as fitness exercises for pregnant women.

While in LaborContraction Timer, Free for Android

Say you don't want all the bells and whistles of 3-D images, weight trackers and doctor's appointment reminders, but the big day has arrived and contractions have started.

Instead of trying to time your contractions with a wristwatch, consider a contraction timer app.

The Contraction Timer app by James Ots looks almost like an app marathoners might use to track their training runs. The app monitors contractions in intervals with start time and duration by the press of a button, and then tracks how they increase over time.

While in LaborContraction Monitor, Free for iPhone

The Contraction Monitor app by Maxwell Software is a little more in-depth than most contraction timing apps.

Monitoring contraction frequency and time intervals, the Contraction Monitor allows users to rate how intense the contraction is on a scale from "very mild" to "very strong." For example, it tells you that a 10-week-old fetus is 1.2 inches long, or about the size of a beer cap.

The app also includes pregnancy facts and tips for dads-to-be, such as foods your partner should avoid when she is pregnant and how to help her prepare for delivery. It even has an odometer-like "Score Board" that counts down to the baby's due date.[
] - Comments: 0

REAL Software Announces REAL Studio Web Edition; Revolutionizes How Web Applications Are Developed. - 12 Jun 2016 02:15

[
]AUSTIN, Texas — REAL Software, creator of REAL Studio, a powerful,

cross-platform software development tool for Mac OS X, Windows and

Linux, today announced a new platform for their development tool, the

web, which will be available in REAL Studio Web Edition. REAL Studio has

a low learning curve, making it the perfect development tool for users

who are new to programming as well as professional developers.

Traditional web development requires developers to learn multiple

languages including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, AJAX, PHP and Java. REAL

Studio Web Edition, which includes patent pending technology, provides a

visual drag and drop interface builder that saves hours of development

time when compared to hand-coding HTML and CSS. Developers will only

need to learn a single high-level, object-oriented language which is

tightly integrated with the REAL Studio web framework.

Benefits of using REAL Studio Web Edition to develop web

applications include:

* Low learning curve compared to learning multiple complicated

languages.

* Speed of development is 30 to 50 times faster than traditional

languages.

* The compiled applications are binaries, making them extremely

difficult to hack.

* Applications are compiled to machine code allowing developers to

sell their software with the knowledge that their intellectual property

is safe and secure.

* A lot of widgets are included to help you build your user

interface.

* If you choose, you can give your app a desktop-like look and

feel.

* Because it compiles your app to machine code, code execution is

very fast compared to interpreted languages like PHP.

* The integrated debugger makes tracking down bugs far easier than

traditional web development tools.

"Traditional web application development takes too long and the

learning curve puts it out of the reach of most developers,"

commented Geoff Perlman, REAL Software Founder and CEO. "REAL

Studio revolutionizes the way web applications are created by making it

accessible to all developers. Traditionally you'd need to learn

several different web technologies, but now we can offer a single

solution. By replacing a long list of languages and techniques with a

single, highly-integrated solution, we dramatically lower the learning

curve and greatly increase productivity which finally makes web

application development affordable."

"As far as web applications and user experience go, looking

like a real desktop application is one thing, but feeling like it is

another," offered Hicham Oudghiri, a developer at Querylabs.

"The people at REAL Software have deeply investigated these sorts

of subtleties and made it possible to move beyond OS dependency. Finally

we can create applications where no compromises are made during

development in between form and function, where there is no difference

in between desktop and browser."

"REAL Studio is taking the mundane and tedious tasks out of the

web development process," commented Mike Bailey, a developer for

BlackBag Technologies and longtime REAL Studio user. "Web

developers will be much more efficient and concentrate on learning just

one language rather than getting multiple tools and languages to

interface nicely with each other. REAL Software has been doing this for

over a decade for desktop applications and I'm excited to see it

coming to the web."

"Redcort Software has been using REAL Studio to develop

cross-platform commercial applications for over a decade,"

commented Keith Delong of Redcort Software. "After an extensive

evaluation of development tools available for web applications we

couldn't be more enthusiastic about REAL Software's new Web

Edition for REAL Studio. By adding the ability to easily build web

applications to their mature REAL Studio product, REAL Software has

given the web development community a revolutionary new set of tools: a

truly integrated development environment for the web with an easy-to-use

graphical interface, a mature compiler, debugging tools, and a powerful,

modern object-oriented programming language."

REAL Studio Web Edition will be available Fall 2010. REAL Studio Web

Edition will cost $599 for a new license and will also be available in

REAL Studio Enterprise Edition, which is priced at $995. What's interesting about this revelation is that I've been working in the smartphone industry for more than 10 years now. If that's how long it took me, and I work in the industry, how long is it going to take the rest of the world? Not much longer, I expect.

I used to work for BlackBerry, so I was involved with early smartphones. At the time, a smartphone was a phone that did 'more'; it had a browser, email, PIM, and you could make apps for it that allowed you to do pretty much anything you wanted. The definition has changed a bit, and nowadays most of the world thinks that Apple created the smartphone, but experience tells me otherwise.

Anyway, for all these years, I've loved having a smartphone - Just having a phone, email and a browser was enough for me. I helped a lot of people write apps for smartphones, and used a few apps myself (Facebook, Fandango, Twitter and Flipboard for example) but my phone wasn't such an important part of my life that it replaced other things. Actually, having worked for BlackBerry, and being connected all the time, drove me to want to disconnect from access at the end of my day. If I was on the road, you could reach me any time, but while at home. I'd leave my phone in my office at the end of the day. Friends or coworkers would call or email me after hours and not hear back from me until the next morning.

So, what happened? Well, mobile just got easier, that's what happened. I don't know how to explain it any other way.

http://blogs.forrester.com/application_development[
] - Comments: 0
