How Does Microsoft Office 2010 Compare? by Chris Holgate - 08 May 2017 10:23

Tags:

[
]The release of the new Microsoft Office suite isn't the most exciting thing in the world, the fact that it is used nearly every day on my work computer doesn't help matters. Nevertheless, I thought it would be good to compare it to the older versions to see how it stands up against them.

With the final release due in a couple of months, Microsoft have provided a beta test version of Office 2010 that's free for members of the public to download. The beta test version will run unhindered web development application company until October 2010 at which point users must decide whether they wish to purchase the final release or have it removed from their hard drive.

For the sole reason that it costs money to buy, the majority of users may still be better off with the free OpenOffice Suite (www.openoffice.org) as it still includes all of the features needed but at no cost. This having been said, the Office Suite has remained a popular flagship product over the years due to business users often requiring a specific function or application only present in the Microsoft offering. I, for example, use Outlook on a regular basis and haven't yet found an alternative that suits my needs.

Having not been the biggest fan of Office 2007 (especially the 'ribbon' interface discussed in the past) I wasted no time downloading the 64-bit professional version of the beta to put it through its paces. I have now been using it for a couple of days it does appear notably faster than Office 2007 and certainty incredibly stable. The speed increase could easily be attributed to the fact that a 64-bit version of the application is now available to run on modern 64-bit computers.

Office Professional 2010 includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, InfoPath, OneNote, Outlook, Access and Publisher. The home edition (also currently available in beta) includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote. After the official release, computer manufacturers may choose to bundle new machines with a starter edition of Office which includes just Excel and Word; this version of Office will replace the aging Microsoft Works Suite.

Although the ribbon interface remains, it is certainly a lot clearer than that provided with Office 2007; it is a far more simple application to navigate, the familiar file menu is back, there are fewer fancy borders and colours and it is also customisable to the users individual tastes. The applications look and behave like a 'family' now and have become more intuitive to use as a result of the more refined user interface.

An important new feature due for release in the final version but missing from the beta is the 'Web Apps' which will extend the Office functionality to a compatible web browser. Very similar in form to Google Docs, Office Web Apps allows users to collaborate, edit and share Office documents online. This is an incredibly important new feature that has no doubt come about due to the success of Google Docs and one that I would like to field test when complete.

This article isn't long enough to go in to details about minor new features so I will summarise by observing that the changes made from Office 2007 to Office 2010 are evolutionary rather than revolutionary; just as Windows 7 was an evolutionary change compared with Windows Vista. Excluding the Web Apps there is nothing substantially new however the minor improvements are certainly welcome as is the chance to road test a new piece of software completely free of charge for a year.[
] - Comments: 0

Advantages of Web-based Applications - 26 Mar 2017 08:08

Tags:

[
]When one hears of web-based applications we wonder what are they exactly? They are actually applications which are used either over the Internet or Intranet. In other words, web applications are used over a network. Sometimes, the term can also be used for applications which are hosted on a web browser controlled environment. An application, which is coded in a browser supported language can also be called a web application. In the last few years, these applications have come to the forefront for they have many advantages. One can use these application widely, which is an advantage. The most commonly used applications include webmail, online auctions, retail sales, etc.

Advantages

The web-based applications have come a long way from the desktop applications. Many users are using these over the desktop applications. The differences can be compared with application vs web server.

Convenience

It is very convenient for use. One can access these applications 24 hours a day and 365 days a year. They can be used in any part of the world, at any given time. The entire database is available all the time. One can either make use of the computer or phone to access the required data, whenever it is required. A person need not be confined only to his office.

No Installation and/or Maintenance

Unlike the desktop applications, these do not have to be installed as they run on a web server. The time and trouble required for installing a software are also done away with. At the same time, since the web servers are used, maintenance and troubleshooting problems hardly arise. One does not have to go through the headache of heavy backups to be taken on disk space, etc., either.

Cost

As compared to the desktop applications, these are cost-effective. At the same time, they do not waste any space on the computer, as the software are run from a server. One does not have to pay for maintenance fees either.

Multiple Platforms

The beauty of the web applications is that they work on multiple platforms. Most of the applications work on different Internet browsers like Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, etc. They are often also compatible with most of the computer operating systems. Immaterial of the browser or the operating system, there is no difference in the way these applications work. The quality of work remains the same all the time.

Advanced Versions

As a user, you do not have to worry about whether the application is up-to-date. There is no need of being on the run always, as the up-gradation, etc. is taken care of. This is one of the best advantages of open source web applications.

User Training

One does not have to undergo training at any particular time. At the same time, if a particular user is a slow learner or does not have a lot of time to spare, then he/she can decide the pace of learning as well.

Disadvantages

Among the disadvantages, the first one is that if the Internet connectivity is slower, the application will also take time to run. This may cause the user some headache if he is in a hurry to finish up the work. Since these applications are developed to be compatible for a number of web browsers as well as operating systems, they do not come with sophisticated interfaces. This can be a turn off, if a user is used to sophisticated interfaces. At the same time, developing a web application often takes more time, as compared to the desktop software development. Since a lot of work has to be done on the compatibility of browsers along with the versions, the developers do take considerable amount of time for the same. Last but not the least, there are certain security issues which need to be addressed when it comes to web-based applications. There are chances of it being hacked, whether knowingly or unknowingly. Therefore, more care has to be taken to work on this concern.

Like it is said every coin has two sides, same is the case with the web applications as well. Along with it, severity of the pros and cons will help you decide the kind of application you are looking for.[
] - Comments: 0

K-Mac, BRM take over KFC franchising turf. (NW Journal). - 24 Mar 2017 04:49

[
]The territory that includes eight closed KFC restaurants in

northwest Arkansas is being taken over by two Arkansas KFC franchisees,

K-Mac Enterprises Inc. of Fort Smith and BRM Foods Inc. of Searcy.

Some of those restaurants will be reopened, and others will be

renovated or relocated, said Bob Mosesso, who is a partner with Billy

BRM acquired the turf in Springdale and eastern Fayerteville and

plans to reopen the three KFCs in those cities within the next seven

months, although the two Springdale stores may be relocated.

The eight restaurants were closed in December when Newmark Foods

K-Mac has taken over the KFC franchising territory in Rogers,

Mosesso said BRM chose not to reopen at the Mathias Drive location,

in part because that location is a "power pumper" store with

gasoline pumps in addition to an eatery.

Mosesso said BRM is looking to open a second store in Fayetteville,

probably in the vicinity of Crossover Road and Mission Boulevard, but

that could be several years from now.

Mosesso said BRM's Fayetteville store can seat 106 diners.

No spokesman for K-Mac could be reached for comment. K-Mac took

App Store vs. Web Apps | Reuters - 20 Mar 2017 23:46

Tags:

[
]By Ryan Faas at Computerworld

Apple's App Store approval process has always been a bit controversial because of the level of control the company holds over what types of applications are allowed in. Initially, there were concerns that Apple rejected apps because they duplicated functionality the company already offered or was planning to build into the iPhone OS — not because the submitted apps wouldn't run according to the company's specifications.

After this winter's purge of apps that could be construed as adult in nature, the controversy ballooned as both developers and consumers objected to Apple imposing its morality on them and limiting free speech. Although Apple argues that the move is to protect children and teens perusing the App Store (a laudable goal), many felt that such protection could be enforced with better parental controls or by creating an 18+ (or even 21+) section of the App Store.

The controversy over Apple's iron-clad control ratcheted up again after the company announced and previewed parts of the iPhone OS 4, which was unveiled in April and will be front and center at this year's Worldwide Developers Conference. In addition to the many new features in the next-generation iPhone OS 4 — and the opening of many new APIs to developers — the company also amended its developer agreement to block the use of any software development tools other than Apple's own Xcode. That's what really added fuel to the company's feud with Adobe over Flash.

The decision seemed mainly aimed at Adobe's Flash Packager for iPhone, which allowed applications created in Flash to be converted to native Objective-C code matching the parameters for inclusion in the App Store. However, the ban on cross-compiled apps went beyond Adobe and Flash. RunRev, which had been planning to offer a HyperCard-like development environment for quick and easy app creation, was also left out in the cold.

The end result: Anyone thinking about offering an iPhone app has to decide whether to create a Web-based app or use Apple's development tools, which only run on a Mac, require membership in Apple's iPhone developer program and must adhere to its App Store policies — policies that sometimes change with little warning.

What's an app developer to do? Read on.

The difference between Web and native apps

Initially, Web apps were the only way for developers to create iPhone-specific applications; they were supported a few months after the iPhone's initial release in 2007. They allowed Web developers to create Web sites specifically formatted for the iPhone's relatively small touch screen. Working with dynamic coding options specific to the iPhone, Web developers could use HTML, CSS and JavaScript to create Web-based applications that mirrored the look and feel of the apps Apple included with the iPhone. Launched alongside the new Web-clip feature that allows users to place bookmarks as icons on the iPhone's home screen, the effect was very much like creating a workable iPhone application — albeit one that required an Internet connection over Wi-Fi or AT&T's network (which, at the time was limited to the older and slower EDGE network).

Web apps were a stop-gap measure between the original closed iPhone OS and its first major upgrade in 2008, which allowed developers to create third-party apps and introduced the App Store for them to show off their wares. At first, third-party apps were somewhat limited. But with succeeding OS updates, Apple offered more capabilities, and today third-party apps can even access part of the iPhone's core features, such as using the GPS capabilities of the iPhone 3G and 3GS to acquire location information.

Native applications — those created using the Apple Xcode development environment — obviously offer developers a broader range of features. But developing native apps for distribution via the App Store also means obeying all of Apple's guidelines and purchasing a $99-per-year iPhone developer membership. It also requires a knowledge of the Objective-C programming language and a familiarity with Xcode.

The pros and cons

Deciding whether to create a Web or native app depends on a number of factors. First and foremost is the ability and willingness to learn to write Objective-C code and use the Xcode environment. For experienced Mac developers, there's very little learning curve, since the underpinnings of the iPhone OS and Mac OS X are essentially the same. However, for anyone without web design bedfordview that kind of experience, Objective-C and Xcode can be a bit daunting, which is why developers liked RunRev and Adobe's Flash Packager for iPhone, both of which offered an easier learning environment, before Apple changed the development rules for iPhone OS 4.

For those organizations simply looking to present content in an iPhone OS-specific format or to tie into existing Web-enabled resources like personal information managers or databases, there's an advantage in going with a Web app. Development will likely be easier and quicker, these types of uses generally won't require a lot of advanced features, and they rely largely on commonly used Web technologies. Take a look at Apple's Web app directory for examples of what can be achieved.

For sites that use WordPress as a blog tool or content management system, creating a Web app is even easier: There's as a WordPress plug-in that automatically formats content as a Web app for the iPhone OS and other mobile platforms such as Android, Palm webOS and the Blackberry Storm. It's freely available, and it works. Just head to Ryanfaas.com on a supported device.

Although Apple supports Web apps, it doesn't maintain the degree of control over them that it does with native apps. That's largely because Web apps are essentially specially formatted Web pages. As a result, Web apps are free from any of Apple's requirements for native apps. Google actually used this as a solution after Apple refused to rule on its Google Voice app.

For developers who want to create more-robust apps — including those that take advantage of more iPhone OS core features and APIs — Web apps can be constraining. Those limitations will be even more noticeable with the release of iPhone OS 4, which will offer a wide range of new features for native-app developers. Native apps also don't require hosting the app on a Web server like Web apps, which, depending on the popularity of the app, could get rather expensive.

Web apps also can't be monetized as easily as native apps, for which developers can set a purchase price and prices for in-app purchases that deliver additional features and content. In picking which direction they want to go, developers have to settle on an ultimate goal: Is their application designed primarily to make money or simply to offer up content or information?

Business, education and internal app development

The calculus on Web apps vs. native apps changes a bit if you're creating apps only for internal use at an organization. Apple's enterprise iPhone developer program exists for creating native apps that will not be submitted to the App Store. At $299 a year, the program is more expensive than the general developer program, but it allows organizations to internally develop and distribute native apps. Since the apps don't need App Store approval, they aren't bound by all the requirements of commercially developed apps (though they still require a working knowledge of Apple's development tools).

Distributing internal native apps also requires provisioning all iPhone OS devices within the organization with security certificates indicating that those devices are allowed to run internal apps. While the current iPhone OS doesn't make deploying either the security credentials or the apps themselves as quick and easy as most systems administrators would like, it can be done.

And it's slated to become much simpler with iPhone OS 4.

Another option for enterprise environments that utilize terminal services such as Citrix are iPhone and iPad apps that allow access to virtual desktops and applications. For an organization already using such technology, products like the Citrix Receiver deliver the same level of access as a Mac, PC or other thin client. (Citrix Receiver is free in the App Store and includes demo environments for evaluation purposes.) The small screen size of the iPhone and iPod Touch imposes some limitations, though Citrix and third-party companies provide a range of ways to present data and enterprise apps in a smartphone-oriented format that can also be used with other mobile platforms, including Android, BlackBerry and Windows Mobile.

For many organizations, though, a thin-client approach might work best with the iPad. Web 3.0 Applications - 16 Mar 2017 20:50

Tags:

[
]We can just imagine or wonder how the Web 3.0 applications will be like. The drastic changes that Web 2.0 brought over to the world of Internet, leaves us dumbfounded on imagining what will be the changes in Web 3.0. Will the focus of the change mainly lie on the code or is it the applications and the interface part which will again be targeted. Before starting off our explanation on the Web 3.0 concept, let us try to understand, what were the changes that the Web 2.0 technology brought in. This will help us get a clearer idea of the Web 3.0 concept.

Transition from Web 1.0 to Web 2.0

Web 1.0 was the age of static pages. You can compare it to a library which contains a lot of information, but you can just absorb it. There was no way in which the information you wanted to lend out, you could pass on to the world. HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language) was the order of the day then. It was the basic language on which all the web pages were designed. It left very little scope or no scope for the user to put in his input towards the sites. This triggered the thought of Web 2.0. How about having sites, where users could contribute. After all, people are the main assets to the world of Internet, and they cannot be left out, when the sites are being designed. HTML pages consisted of meta tags. This enabled the Internet search engines to decide the relevancy of a web page with the searched keyword in an Internet Search Engine. However, the keywords meta tags were exploited by some porn site's webmasters to such an extent, that it caused the search engines to question the relevancy of the meta keyword. They had to use complex algorithms to decide what should the search results be.

The focus was mainly on the source code or the language of the sites. The application part was left out. Then there was the advent of Web 2.0. Social networking sites showed up. The easiest way for users to share their thoughts and to communicate. Users were now able to actually get into the cyber-space and expand their network. Next were blogs. The easiest way how users could share information with others. Even the small comments box, that you see at the bottom of this web page too, is one of the applications of Web 2.0. Search Engines like Google, allowed new ways of Search Engine Optimization and brought in more and more relevant results. Wiki allowed new ways for users to share their own content on different subjects on the Web. Sites like Picassa and Flickr brought in new ways for users to share their pictures. The list of new applications were simply unending.

It was the dot-com bubble in the fall of 2001, which brought in the advent of Web 2.0. What people considered as a flaw in the web world had actually brought in new dimensions to the world wide web. Then there were the banner ads. The banner ads allowed two sites to interconnect. Web development languages like PHP, Javascript, AJAX, etc., became the trend of the day for web sites developers. Sites were connected to each other. A link in one site could just let you travel to another site. However, another aspect of the same was that sites needed to be more secure. This caused the designing of sites to be a cumbersome task.

Web 3.0 Concept

What was just explained was just a glimpse of the amount of changes that the Web 2.0 had brought in to the world of Internet. If this was the amount of changes that a dot com bubble could trigger, what would be the changes that the advent of Web 3.0 be like. What will the Web 3.0 applications mainly target? The most important assets, the users, are already a part of the Internet. What else can be the changes that Web 3.0 technology can bring in. Let's start off with the search engine part. Experts believe that this technology will make search engines much more smarter than the recent search engines.

Artificial Intelligence will be the order of the day. Some assume that the search engines will be such that you enter a complex query in a very much human way of talking and get just one precise output. Let's take an example. Suppose you are looking for the nearest spot near your city to go for a trekking, but you also want certain special amenities that should be nearby. May be you are also looking for a trekking group who are going on the same day and you want to ask if you want to join them. The search engines may allow you to type in a query like "I want to go for a trek not very far away from my city. If there are any more people going for a trek on the same day, it would be better if I could join them and it would be really cool if I get some place after the trek to grab a couple of beers." The search engines may simply answer you by typing you a one line answer to a place where you can go for trekking, name and address of other people who are going for a trek on the same day, and also the address of the bar where you can go after the trek. Now the question is, where does the intelligence part arise. Well, here you did not mention the name of the city you are staying in, but the search results are still popping up. The search engine determines the place where you are staying. The other trek parties who are going in for trek may have searched for some other information, but the search engine simply keeps their records too and associates them with yours to give some relevant results. It may sound amazing, but many people would definitely consider it as a breach into their privacy.

But then again, these applications that we are talking of are simply concepts. There is no proper justification or known fact that they are exactly going to take up this form. Some people, however, contradict that Web 3.0 will again focus on the code part or the language part. Needless to say, business is the main priority of all the web based applications. Companies build sites, store heavy amount of data on their servers, and most of the time, when they have to make a major changes in their sites, they need to go offline. The Web 3.0 applications are considered to allow more security and allow companies to make changes into their sites, while not having to go offline. The concept is basically that search engines will be able to read web pages as clearly as humans do. Thus, the result will be more and more relevant.

All the Web 3.0 concepts that have been discussed here may or may not come exactly like what has been described. The most important question is, whether the change will be on the application part or on the coding part. Well, we have to just wait and watch.

[
